New Lancet Guidance Advocates Early Intervention and BIS Utilization to Alleviate Arm Lymphedema in Breast Cancer Patients

Friday, February 16, 2024

ImpediMed, a pioneering force in medical technology, has announced a significant breakthrough in addressing breast cancer-related lymphedema, a frequently overlooked but prevalent condition among survivors. Recently, the esteemed medical journal eClinicalMedicine, associated with The Lancet Discovery Science, published new clinical guidelines advocating for early detection and preventive strategies, validating the efficacy of ImpediMed's innovative approach. These guidelines, endorsed by the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and formulated by a diverse panel of experts from 16 countries and 12 disciplines specializing in lymphedema, underscore the importance of routine monitoring for breast cancer-related arm lymphedema (BCRAL), a condition characterized by debilitating arm swelling post-breast cancer treatment.

At the heart of these recommendations lies bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), a cutting-edge technology developed by ImpediMed, designed to identify lymphedema in its early stages, thereby preventing its progression. Lymphedema, a common consequence of cancer treatment, presents significant healthcare challenges. According to the American Cancer Society, a considerable percentage of cancer patients, particularly those diagnosed with breast cancer, melanoma, or pelvic area cancers, are at risk of developing limb lymphedema.

March marks Lymphedema Awareness Month, dedicated to increasing awareness and educating patients and healthcare providers about lymphedema's impact and advancements in care and treatment to enhance patients' well-being. This guidance acknowledges ImpediMed's technology as a validated approach to establishing surveillance programs for detecting and preventing Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema on both national and global scales. As ImpediMed continues to advocate for early lymphedema detection and prevention, its efforts are reshaping the landscape of breast cancer survivorship care, ensuring that survivors can look forward to improved quality of life.
