OrthoVentions Teams Up with Motio[OV] for 3D Printed Big Toe Arthritis Treatment

Saturday, March 09, 2024

OrthoVentions LLC has recently announced its investment in MotioOV, a startup established through collaboration with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). MotioOV is dedicated to developing an innovative 3D printed implant and customized instruments aimed at alleviating stiffness and pain associated with arthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint.

This investment will enable MotioOV to advance product development and prepare for a commercial launch, focusing on addressing the unmet clinical need for a functional MTP joint implant that reduces pain and preserves motion. This is a departure from the common practice of resorting to joint fusion, which often yields suboptimal outcomes. MotioOV's solution involves a range of implant sizes and single-use instruments designed specifically for total joint arthroplasty.

The prevalence of arthritic toe pain underscores the urgency for effective solutions, with a significant portion of patients visiting foot and ankle surgeons seeking relief. MotioOV's approach is grounded in a thorough understanding of MTP joint anatomy and associated forces, aiming to design an implant that minimizes tissue damage while promoting stability.

The collaboration with Doctors Johnson and Demetracopoulos, renowned for their surgical expertise in forefoot and total joint arthroplasty, will be instrumental in crafting a comprehensive solution comprising implants and instrumentation. Arthritis of the MTP joint poses an increasingly prevalent clinical challenge, particularly as the aging population grows, yet viable motion-preserving options remain scarce.
