Tampa General Hospital Completes First TMVR with AltaValve in Southeast

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has achieved notable success with its first transcatheter mitral valve implant (TMVR), marking a milestone as the only hospital in the Southeast to perform such a catheter-based mitral valve replacement. The patient, suffering from severe mitral regurgitation (MR), a common heart condition often requiring open-heart surgery, underwent the minimally invasive procedure at TGH's Davis Islands campus in downtown Tampa in December. Discharged safely after just two days, the patient's treatment underscores TGH's dedication to pioneering advanced technologies, particularly for high-risk patients.

The TMVR procedure, facilitated by a multidisciplinary team, exemplifies TGH's commitment to setting new standards of care through cutting-edge technologies and exceptional talent. TGH is one of only five healthcare systems nationwide authorized by the FDA to participate in a feasibility study using AltaValve technology for TMVR. Through collaborative efforts with USF Health, TGH integrates clinical care, academics, and research to offer innovative therapies tailored to complex health conditions.

The successful TMVR procedure owes much to a diverse team of specialists in interventional cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac imaging, and heart failure. This collaboration ensures comprehensive evaluation and consideration of treatment options, ranging from traditional open chest surgery to minimally invasive techniques and transcatheter therapies.

AltaValve, a custom-designed prosthetic valve crafted using 3D printing technology, is implanted in the left atrium during minimally invasive procedures, providing stability and improved outcomes for patients with mitral valve issues. Early clinical trials of AltaValve have shown promising results, including enhanced heart function and reduced symptoms of mitral valve regurgitation.
