UZ Brussel and Aidoc Partner to Introduce Advanced AI-Driven Pulmonary Embolism Treatment in Europe

Thursday, October 26, 2023

Aidoc has unveiled a pioneering partnership with the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) at UZ Brussel (UZB), making it the first European hospital to utilize AI technology for streamlining cross-departmental care coordination and expediting treatment for individuals suspected of having pulmonary embolism (PE). Aidoc's AI system has the capability to identify potential PE cases and promptly notifies the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team at UZ Brussel, facilitating swift, multidisciplinary decision-making and the rapid administration of life-saving interventions.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in accelerating the treatment of pulmonary embolisms. The AI system's methodical evaluation of medical images based on pre-established criteria greatly contributes to early PE detection. Pulmonary embolism, caused by the obstruction of a lung artery by a blood clot, ranks as the third most common acute cardiovascular syndrome. Without timely intervention, it can prove fatal. With a growing number of hospital admissions and an increased demand for CT scans in emergency departments, radiologists face an ongoing challenge in swiftly communicating results to referring physicians.

Aidoc's "always on" AI system has already been operational at UZ Brussel, systematically assessing all chest CT examinations for potential PE cases and prioritizing those that raise suspicion within the radiology workflow. With this collaboration, when Aidoc's AI system identifies a suspected acute PE case, it initiates notifications to PERT team members. The team comprises an interventional radiologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, and intensivist, and these notifications include pertinent images and clinical data, such as the right ventricle-to-left ventricle ratio, a crucial predictor of adverse outcomes in acute PE cases. Additionally, Aidoc's mobile app features a chat function, enabling secure cross-departmental discussions and facilitating prompt, coordinated actions. The Aidoc aiOS™, the company's industry-leading operating system, automates each stage of the imaging workflow, from image acquisition and algorithm activation to care escalation, ensuring optimal efficiency.
