ZAP Surgical, a leading player in the surgical robotics arena, has recently announced the installation of its revolutionary ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform at the Nordstrahl Radiation Therapy group practice within the Nuremberg Nord Clinic. Patient treatments are set to commence in the winter of 2024. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), a proven and well-studied non-invasive treatment for specific brain tumors and metastases, is known to deliver outcomes equivalent to or better than surgery, all without the need for incisions, offering a painless procedure.
Nordstrahl, already equipped with an array of conventional radiation oncology technologies, is expanding its treatment capabilities by incorporating ZAP-X as its dedicated cranial SRS solution. This addition enables them to align patient indications with specialized technologies, reinforcing their commitment to offering cutting-edge innovations in cancer care.
The ZAP-X system distinguishes itself with its innovative design, utilizing gyroscopic mobility to guide radiosurgical beams from various angles, ensuring precise radiation concentration on the tumor target. This approach is in line with the clinical goal of preserving healthy brain tissue and maintaining cognitive function. While stereotactic radiosurgery is considered a significant advancement in modern medicine, previous technologies faced challenges due to high construction costs of shielded radiation treatment rooms and the management of radioactive isotopes. ZAP-X addresses these issues with its vault-free design, eliminating the need for expensive shielded rooms and the use of live radioactive isotopes.
