UC San Diego Health Concludes Acquisition Deal with Alvarado Hospital Medical Center

Tuesday, December 12, 2023

UC San Diego Health has successfully completed the acquisition of Alvarado Hospital Medical Center from Prime Healthcare, representing a significant expansion of the university's healthcare network. This strategic move aims to enhance UC San Diego Health's capacity to provide safe, timely, and equitable access to high-quality healthcare services. The acquisition, valued at $200 million, solidifies UC San Diego Health's dedication to fostering a robust, community-oriented model of care.

The facility, now known as UC San Diego Health East Campus Medical Center and located at 6655 Alvarado Road, has undergone notable improvements, including a revamped emergency department, expanded behavioral health services, and a remodeled intensive care unit. This acquisition aligns with UC San Diego Health's decade-long growth to meet the increasing demand for health services. The focus on behavioral health services will be a key priority, with plans for a dedicated behavioral health patient care tower in collaboration with the County of San Diego.

UC San Diego Health, nationally recognized for its psychiatric care, aims to centralize behavioral health services at East Campus Medical Center. This model ensures a comprehensive continuum of care, addressing the regional shortage of acute psychiatric beds. Additionally, it provides expanded training opportunities for medical students, therapy trainees, residents, advanced practice providers, and physician fellows.

In alignment with its 10-year vision, UC San Diego Health is systematically improving timely access to services and care. Ongoing revitalization efforts at the medical center campus in Hillcrest include the forthcoming opening of a new outpatient surgical center in 2025. Plans for a new replacement hospital are in progress, while the establishment of new clinics across the region underscores UC San Diego Health's commitment to meeting evolving healthcare needs.
