Atrium Health Union West Breaks Ground on US$116 Million Hospital Expansion
Introduction
Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, has broken ground on a new patient tower at Atrium Health Union West in Charlotte, North Carolina. The US$116 million expansion is designed to increase hospital capacity and expand access to inpatient, emergency and procedural care for the growing populations of Union and southeastern Mecklenburg counties.
Features
The expansion will add more than 67,000 square feet to the hospital, creating capacity for 88 new patient rooms to support increasing demand for inpatient care.
The Emergency Department will be expanded with 11 additional bays, increasing capacity to provide emergency services to the surrounding communities.
The project will also include one new endoscopy room and one procedure room, expanding the hospital’s procedural capabilities.
Additional imaging, ancillary and support services will be enhanced through new infrastructure and additional assets, supporting the hospital’s growing clinical operations.
Atrium Health Union West has provided maternity, emergency, surgical, imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services since opening in February 2022.
The hospital has served more than 200,000 patients, while patient visits have increased by 127%, highlighting increased demand for local healthcare services.
The project is being developed in partnership with DPR Construction and is expected to strengthen access to hospital-based care for residents across Union County and surrounding communities.
