ChristianaCare Invests $75 Million to Develop Rehabilitation Hospital

Introduction

ChristianaCare has received approval to develop a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Newark, Delaware. The project represents a $75 million investment and aims to improve access to specialised rehabilitation services across the state.

Features

The planned hospital will be a 92,000 square foot, freestanding facility with 73 beds.

It will be developed in partnership with the Onix Group, a Delaware-based organisation specialising in post-acute healthcare facilities.

The hospital will provide a wide range of inpatient rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational and speech therapy.

Additional services will include music and recreational therapy, along with specialised care for patients with traumatic brain injuries and other complex conditions.

The facility will include on-site diagnostic services such as X-ray, ultrasound and swallowing studies.

It will also incorporate advanced technologies, including electrical stimulation systems and robotic-assisted exoskeleton devices to support patient recovery.

The development will expand capacity by relocating 40 existing beds from the current rehabilitation centre at Wilmington Hospital and adding 33 new beds.

This increase is expected to allow treatment for around 1,000 additional patients each year, with further growth anticipated over time.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, with the hospital scheduled to open in summer 2028.
