Munson Healthcare to Build $40M Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Traverse City
Introduction:
Munson Healthcare has confirmed plans to build a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City as part of a $40 million investment in women’s and children’s services. The project, recently approved by the organisation’s board, aims to enhance care for newborns, mothers, and families across Northern Michigan.
Features:
The development includes a new one-storey, 22,000 square-foot facility with 24 specialised care beds for premature and critically ill babies.
The project also covers significant improvements to existing maternity and paediatric units.
Renovations to two-thirds of the 19-bed maternity unit have already been completed, with £3.1 million (US$4 million) invested since 2023 to create a safer and more modern environment.
Planning is now underway for enhancements to the paediatric unit, scheduled to start in early 2026.
Munson Medical Center operates the only NICU in Northern Michigan, providing specialised care for more than 325 newborns each year.
The new facility will be directly linked to the main hospital and situated between the hospital and the Cowell Family Cancer Center, ensuring close coordination of care and easier access for families and medical teams.
The new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is expected to open in late 2027.
