Sarasota Memorial Breaks Ground on $507 Million SMH–North Port Project
Introduction:
Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is preparing to clear land for North Port’s first full-service hospital, SMH-North Port. Alongside the initial build, a $57 million expansion plan has been approved to add additional shell space, allowing for rapid future growth. The total project cost will rise to $507 million with the expansion.
Features:
The approved expansion includes three additional floors of shell space for the main hospital tower and one floor of shell space for the adjoining medical office building.
The new hospital will have nine floors, and the adjacent medical office building will have three floors.
Shell space will enable SMH to increase capacity quickly, expanding from 100 to 208 beds and growing medical office space from 60,000 to 90,000 square feet.
The first phase will offer emergency, surgical, diagnostic, and specialty care services, along with outpatient facilities.
Long-term plans include a flexible campus design that could accommodate over 400 beds in future phases.
The 100-bed hospital on North Sumter Boulevard is scheduled to open in autumn 2028.
