UAB Hospital Secures $73 Million Emergency Department Expansion

Introduction:

UAB Hospital is initiating temporary and long-term expansions of the UAB Hospital University Emergency Department to address the escalating demand for emergency medical services.

Features:

UAB Hospital is undergoing expansions of its emergency department to meet the increasing demand for medical services.

The temporary expansion started in June 2023 with interior renovations in the North Pavilion, adding nine new exam rooms and temporary waiting room space.

Two mobile treatment units will be installed along 18th Avenue South in August 2023, providing 16 additional treatment spaces.

The long-term expansion plan includes renovating the first floor of the North Pavilion and constructing a new three-story space in the drop-off drive.

The project, with an anticipated 66,030 new square feet of construction, will incorporate 59 new exam rooms and expanded imaging capacity to enhance emergency clinical care.

The expansion projects aim to improve patient care by increasing capacity, reducing wait times, and enhancing patient and staff satisfaction.

Factors contributing to the demand for emergency services include an aging population, high trauma volumes, limited access to primary care, and high patient acuity.
Construction for the long-term expansion is anticipated to start in 2024
