University Hospital of Northern British Columbia Invests $1.68B to Modernize Health Infrastructure
Introduction
The University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) is undergoing a major $1.68 billion expansion to improve access to health services across Northern British Columbia. Located in Prince George on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh, the project will deliver a new acute care tower to meet the needs of a growing and ageing population.
Features
Construction of a new 11-storey acute care tower. 6 new cardiac care beds and 20 new cardiac step-down beds.
This includes cardiac clinics and diagnostics, including two cardiac catheterisation laboratories and one hybrid operating theatre.
47 additional surgical inpatient beds (102 total) and 5 additional operating theatres (12 total).
Expanded mental health facilities, including new adolescent and adult psychiatric inpatient beds, withdrawal management beds, and psychiatric brief intervention beds.
Construction of the acute care tower is planned to begin in autumn 2026, with the facility expected to open to patients in winter 2031.
