Atreon Orthopedics Launches First-of-Its-Kind BioCharge® Autobiologic Matrix for Rotator Cuff Repair
Atreon Orthopaedics has received 510(k) clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its BioCharge® Autobiologic Matrix.
The product is now being launched for full market availability. BioCharge is a bioresorbable synthetic implant designed to improve the effectiveness of rotator cuff repair by addressing biological failure modes and enhancing long-term patient outcomes.
The BioCharge implant functions as an onlay scaffold, supporting the body’s natural healing process. It encourages biological activity at the bursal side of the tendon, facilitates collagen remodelling to reduce scar tissue formation, and strengthens the suture-tendon interface to lower the risk of suture cut-through failure.
The implant has been designed to simplify arthroscopic procedures while enhancing healing and reducing costs. By integrating the delivery and fixation system into the product itself, the need for additional stapling devices used in existing market solutions has been eliminated.
This streamlined approach ensures consistency in repair while maintaining safety and effectiveness. During the limited market launch, early clinical observations at five months post-operation have shown positive outcomes, with no reported adverse events.
Atreon’s electrospun nanofibre platform technology differentiates BioCharge from traditional augmentation devices that rely on animal-derived collagen or human dermal allografts. These conventional materials often come with patient compatibility concerns and costly manufacturing processes.
This technology promotes superior cellular attachment and growth compared to leading collagen-based alternatives. The implant's bioresorbable fibres, made from poly (glycolic acid) (PGA) and poly (lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL), contribute to the healing process by providing anti-inflammatory effects, encouraging vascular remodelling, and accelerating cell migration.
For complex rotator cuff tears, BioCharge can be used in combination with ROTIUM through Atreon’s BioStack Kit.
This integrated approach provides biologically driven solutions that support better patient outcomes, setting a new standard in rotator cuff repair.
