Cook Medical Unveils PillSense™ a Breakthrough Device for Advanced Blood Sensing Technology

Cook Medical has introduced the distribution of the PillSense™ GI Bleed Detection System in the United States. This innovative device can detect upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in patients within 10 minutes, making it the latest addition to Cook’s range of GI bleed management solutions.

The PillSense GI Bleed Detection System aims to address this challenge by enabling clinicians to triage and prioritise patients with suspected GI bleeding more effectively, particularly those who are hemodynamically stable. This can help optimise the use of critical healthcare resources.

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a significant medical concern, accounting for 6-7% of all medical admissions, with over half a million cases annually.

The system has a reusable receiver and a single-use ingestible capsule that detects the presence of blood in the upper GI tract. It is the first FDA-approved ingestible blood detection system, which gives rapid and accurate results.

When a patient swallows the capsule, it travels through the upper gastrointestinal tract, transmitting data to the handheld receiver, which displays a clear result within 10 minutes.

Benefits of PillSense are utilising light-absorption technology, the system delivers reliable results with 93% sensitivity and 91% specificity. Results are available in under 10 minutes, allowing for swift diagnosis.

The system requires no patient preparation and can be operated by healthcare providers without specialised training. The receiver provides straightforward results, eliminating the need for image interpretation.

This technology is expected to improve patient care by enabling timely diagnoses and appropriate interventions. On a broader scale, it supports hospitals in managing patients more efficiently by enhancing risk stratification and resource allocation.
