Masimo Secures Novel FDA Clearance for AI-Enabled Opioid-Induced Respiratory Depression Detection

Masimo has received US Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for an artificial intelligence-enabled opioid-induced respiratory depression detection capability integrated into its Radius VSM® wearable continuous patient monitor.

The new feature is designed to help clinicians identify early signs of respiratory deterioration in hospital patients receiving opioid therapy, supporting earlier clinical intervention.

The technology is powered by Masimo’s next-generation smartSET™ pulse oximetry sensor platform, which analyses continuous physiological data using advanced pattern recognition.
 
Unlike conventional monitoring systems that assess individual vital signs, the AI-enabled platform evaluates multiple physiological patterns to detect subtle changes that may indicate an increased risk of respiratory compromise before they become clinically apparent.

Opioid-induced respiratory depression is a serious complication associated with opioid treatment and can lead to life-threatening consequences if not detected promptly. 

By enhancing the diagnostic value of continuous pulse oximetry, the AI system aims to improve patient safety while supporting timely clinical decision-making within existing hospital workflows.

The OIRD detection capability has been integrated into the Radius VSM wearable monitor, allowing continuous patient assessment without restricting mobility. 
The system provides visual alerts that increase as respiratory risk rises and can transmit notifications to remote and centralised monitoring stations, enabling faster response by healthcare teams.

The FDA clearance marks the first implementation of Masimo’s AI-based OIRD detection technology in a hospital monitoring solution. 

The company is also developing additional AI-driven pattern recognition algorithms for its smartSET platform, expanding the use of intelligent patient monitoring to improve clinical awareness, support early intervention and enhance patient outcomes across hospital care settings.
