MedStar Georgetown Advances Single-Port Robotic Surgery Across Three Specialties
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has achieved three surgical milestones using the da Vinci SP® Single-Port robotic system across breast, colorectal and thoracic procedures.
In breast surgery, Dr Lucy De La Cruz performed a robotic bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy through a single 4-centimetre incision hidden beneath the breast.
The procedure combined immediate implant reconstruction, sentinel lymph node biopsy and a nerve-sparing technique designed to help preserve breast sensation.
The approach is intended for selected breast cancer patients and is among a limited number of US hospitals offering robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy.
In colorectal surgery, Dr Tushar Samdani completed a partial bowel resection and colostomy for obstructive rectal cancer using the stoma site as the robot’s sole entry point.
This eliminated the need for additional abdominal incisions.
Dr Marc Margolis subsequently performed the Mid-Atlantic region’s first Single-Port robotic thoracic lobectomy.
The lung procedure was completed through one incision below the rib cage, offering a less invasive alternative to conventional approaches.
MedStar Georgetown is also extending Single-Port robotic surgery into urology and head and neck procedures, highlighting the growing role of robotic technology in minimally invasive surgical care.
