Craig Mermel
Precision Neuroscience has appointed Craig Mermel as Chief AI and Data Officer (CAIDO), reinforcing the company’s focus on artificial intelligence and neural data innovation as it advances brain–computer interface (BCI) technologies toward commercialization.
Mermel, who previously served as Chief Product Officer at Precision Neuroscience, will now lead the company’s AI and data strategy, including oversight of the development, organization, and deployment of Precision’s growing neural dataset. According to the company, the dataset represents one of the most diverse collections of high-resolution neural data assembled to date and includes recordings from more than 75 patients across multiple brain regions.
Precision Neuroscience stated that its proprietary Layer 7™ technology records neural activity directly from the cortical surface, enabling real-time, high-resolution brain activity monitoring. Unlike conventional imaging technologies that measure neural activity indirectly, the company believes its neural interface platform can provide broader applications in neurological disease treatment, AI model training, and drug discovery.
In his expanded role, Mermel will oversee the development of Precision’s neural data pipeline, including data labeling, segmentation, and structuring to create a scalable and secure data asset. He will also lead initiatives related to patient privacy, ethical AI implementation, and data security standards.
Mermel is trained as both a pathologist and data scientist, with expertise in applying artificial intelligence to life sciences and healthcare technologies. Before joining Precision Neuroscience, he worked at Google, where he led teams focused on AI-driven cancer diagnosis and treatment solutions. Earlier, he contributed to health and fitness technology development at Apple, including features for the Apple Watch.
The appointment comes as Precision Neuroscience continues expanding collaborations with leading technology and AI companies while advancing its broader commercialization strategy in the rapidly evolving BCI sector.
