Simon J. Trowell
The Mazzoni Center Board of Directors has appointed Simon J. Trowell as Chief Executive Officer, following a comprehensive national search.
The announcement was made by Dr. Jeff Doucette, President of the Board of Directors.
Trowell is an accomplished healthcare executive with nearly 40 years of experience in the global biopharmaceutical industry. During his tenure at GSK, he held senior roles across clinical research, education, quality, and risk management, leading international teams and overseeing multimillion-dollar operations. Notable achievements include chairing the Clinical Oversight Committee for TransCelerate Biopharma Inc., spearheading enterprise-wide systems to enhance compliance and documentation, and leading a global task force during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trowell joined the Mazzoni Center Board of Directors in January 2024 and was appointed Board Secretary later that year. He assumed the role of Interim CEO in March 2025, where he quickly established himself as a transparent and strategic leader. Under his interim leadership, the organization launched a new 3–5-year strategic plan, identified core values, and introduced new revenue-generating initiatives to support long-term sustainability.
Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Loughborough University of Technology, Trowell brings both scientific expertise and seasoned leadership to his new role. A Philadelphia resident since 2002, he is also an active community member, volunteering with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s Medical Reserve Corps.
His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Mazzoni Center as it strengthens its mission to provide inclusive, high-quality healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community.
